Chair ~ KARL SPRACKLEN

Karl is Subject Group Leader for the Social Sciences of Sport, Leisure and PE at Leeds Metropolitan University, and also a Principal Lecturer in Socio-Cultural Aspects of Sport and Leisure. He was the Course Leader at Leeds Met for the renowned BA (Hons) Leisure and Sport Studies. He has published research on a number of leisure related themes: racism in sport; social identity and rugby league; leisure and globalisation; extreme heavy metal; the sociology of sport science; and leisure theory. He is on the organising committee of the Music, Metal and Politics conference, part of the Inter-Disciplinary.Net initiative. His book, The Meaning and Purpose of Leisure, was published by Palgrave in 2009. Previous to this, he worked as a National Development Manager for Sporting Equals, a project funded by the Commission for Racial Equality and Sport England to promote racial equality in sport. ANDREW ADAMS

Andrew Adams is a senior lecturer at Southampton Solent University Business School where he is course leader for sport development. Andy's doctoral research focuses on the developing relationship between social capital, sports policy and the role of the voluntary sports clubs.

Secretary ~ RUTH JEANES

Dr Ruth Jeanes is currently working as Research Fellow at the University of Central Lancashire. Her research focuses on youth sport policy, gender and sport and the impact of youth sport policy on young people. Overarching this is a methodological interest in innovative ways to engage young people in the research process. Ruth has extensive experience of undertaking impact evaluations of youth sport policy and practice and has conducted research for a range of agencies including UNICEF, the British Council, the Cricket Foundation, Youth Sport Trust and UK Sport. In the last four years Ruth has also been involved in a research partnership with Loughborough, Southampton and York St John Universities working in Lusaka, Zambia with a range of Non Governmental Organisations delivering HIV/AIDS education through sport. Ruth has examined the experiences of young people taking part in these programmes. Ruth completed her PhD in 2006 at Loughborough University, entitled 'Tackling Gender: Girls, football and gender identity construction.' Prior to taking up her post at Uclan Ruth was a research associate at the Institute of Youth Sport at Loughborough.

Newsletter General Editor ~ DAVID LESLIE

David is Reader in Tourism at Glasgow Caledonian University. He has a longstanding involvement with the LSA, dating from his contributions to conferences during the 1980s and subsequent involvement as a Committee member and Editor of the LSA Newsletter. Notably he staged the 1994 LSA conference on "Leisure, Tourism and the Environment", and edited the two resulting LSA Publications volumes: Tourism and Leisure: Culture, Heritage and Participation (No. 51) and Tourism and Leisure: Perspectives on Provision (No. 52). More generally, David is known for research in tourism, which has lead to many publications in leading journals, commissioned reports and conference papers with particular emphasis on tourism and sustainability. Publications Officer ~ JAYNE CAUDWELL

Jayne is senior lecturer in sport and leisure cultures at the University of Brighton. Her work focuses on theories of gender and sexuality and their application to sporting practices, spaces and texts. In particular, she is keen to explore the ways queer and queer theory can help explain sport and the body. She chaired LSA 2004 and co-chaired LSA 2007 annual conferences, has been an executive member 2001­5, returning 2006, and Publications Officer 200`7­present (Exec member from 7/2001-05; returning July 2006; current term expires July 2009)

He is a past-chair of the World Leisure Research Commission, past president of the International Sociological Association Research Committee on Leisure. He currently edits the World Leisure Journal, and is a founder-member of the LSA and Honorary Lifetime Member.

Dr. Donna Wong is currently working with the School of Sport, Tourism
and the Outdoors at the University of Central Lancashire as a Research
Assistant. She completed her PhD, titled 'Young People, New Media and
Sport' in February 2009. Her research examined how sport is employed in
new media age and young people's involvement in sport via the use of new
media technology. Her main research interests concern sport
participation among young people and mediated sport. She is also looking
into the evaluation of the Youth Olympic Games legacies.

SALLY EVERETT

Dr Sally Everett has recently been appointed as Senior Lecturer in Tourism and Sustainable Development at the University of Bedfordshire following the completion of her thesis "Food tourism in the 'Celtic' periphery: spatial, social and cultural resistance" at the University of the West of England. Recent research projects include an EPSRC-funded project on sustainable transport innovations and a GEES subject centre project investigating the effectiveness of ICT in mediating student learning. Her main research interests include social and cultural tourism geographies, critical tourism discourses, rural leisure and tourism development (especially food and drink tourism), and visitor management and heritage interpretation. Recent publications include: Everett (2009) 'Beyond the visual gaze? The pursuit of an embodied experience through food tourism' in Tourist Studies; and Everett and Aitchison (2008) 'The role of food tourism in sustaining regional identity: a case study of Cornwall, South West England' in the Journal of Sustainable Tourism.

SAM ELKINGTON

Sam Elkington works as a researcher and lecturer within the Tourism, Leisure and Sport Management department at the University of Bedfordshire (UK). His main research interests are the investigation and operationalisation of leisure as a state of mind, with particular reference to Csikszentmihalyi's 'flow' theory in the context of Stebbins' serious leisure framework, which together form the central focus for his doctorate research. Recent publications include: Elkington, S. (2006) 'Exploring the nature of pre and post flow in serious leisure', in S. Elkington, I. Jones, and L. TOM FLETCHER ~ Student Representative

Tom is currently undertaking a PhD at the Carnegie Institute of Sport and Education, Leeds Metropolitan University. Prior to attending Leeds Met, Tom gained a 1st class BA Hons degree in Sport, Health and Exercise from the University of Durham. Following this, Tom has undertaken further postgraduate work, first at Sheffield Hallam University where he gained his MA in Sport in Popular Culture and most recently a PGCE at the University of Huddersfield. Tom currently teaches Sociology part time at Penistone Grammar School in Yorkshire. His PhD research explores the interplays between cricket, racialised identities, community and hybridity within a theoretical framework revolving around Cohen's conceptualisation of symbolic boundaries and Anderson's conceptualisation of imagined communities.

AARTI RATNA

Aarti is a lecturer in sociology of sport and leisure at the Carnegie Institute of Sport and Education, Leeds Metropolitan University. Her research interests centre upon the connections between 'race', ethnicity and gender in the context of sport and leisure. Prior to working at Leeds Met, Aarti did a PhD at Chelsea School, University of Brighton about British Asian females' racialised experiences of gender and identity in women's football. She is also a Racial Equality Tutor for the Football Association in England. (Exec member from 7/2007; current term expires July 2010)

AMANDA WARING

Amanda is a researcher in the Department of Social Sciences at Loughborough University (UK). Her research interests include the work/leisure divide, the sociology of 'body work' and health and fitness practices amongst adults and children. IAN WELLARD

Dr Ian Wellard is based in the Faculty of Education, Canterbury Christ Church University, UK, where he is Head of the Centre for Physical Education Research. He gained a MA in Qualitative Sociology at Goldsmiths and a PhD in Sociology at the Open University which was funded by the Pavis Centre. He has been involved in a number funded projects related to the body, gender and sport and physical activity in education. These include an investigation into girls' participation in physical activities for the World Health Organisation, an exploration into talent development in school sport, commissioned by the DfES, and an assessment of national play policy for Play England and the National Children's Bureau. He has published many articles relating to his research in international journals and has recently edited a book on Rethinking Gender and Youth Sport for Routledge. (Current term expires July 2009)
