FLEMING
Scott Fleming is Professor
of Sport and Leisure Studies at the Cardiff School of Sport,
UWIC. A member of the LSA since 1988, he has been Chair since
2004. In addition to a long-standing interests in the sport,
leisure and ethnicity, as well as research ethics, his research
activities include corporate governance and (most recently) aspects
of leisure policy, He has edited a number of LSA publications:
Policy and politics in sport, physical education and leisure
(with Margaret Talbot and Alan Tomlinson), Masculinities:
Leisure identities, cultures and consumption (with John Horne),
New leisure environments: Media, technology and sport
(with Ian Jones), as well as Events management Education,
impacts and experiences and Ethical issues in leisure
research (both with Fiona Jordan). (Exec member from 9/2004;

KARL SPRACKLEN
Dr Karl Spracklen is a Senior
Lecturer in Socio-Cultural Aspects of Sport and Leisure in the
Carnegie Faculty of Sport and Education, Leeds Metropolitan University.
Previously to this, he worked as a National Development Manager
for Sporting Equals, a project funded by the Commission for Racial
Equality and Sport England to promote racism in sport. His research
interests include racism in sport, the construction of social
identity, leisure theory and extreme metal. He currently advises
UK Sport on issues surrounding 'race' and racism, and is an Assessor
for the Equality Standard for Sport. (Exec member from 9/2006;

Vice Chair HELEN
PUSSARD
Helen is a Senior Lecturer
in Sport, Leisure and Culture at Roehampton University, where
she is also a member of the Centre for Scientific & Cultural
Research in Sport. She is Programme Co-ordinator for the MA in
Sport & Culture. Her research interests focus on the cultural
history of sport, leisure and consumption; with a particular
emphasis on leisure sites such as pleasure grounds, lidos and
sport spectacles, on which she has published a number of articles.
In addition, Helen has recently co-edited two LSA volumes: (2006)
Defining the Field: 30 Years of the Leisure Studies Association
with Eileen Kennedy; (2004) Leisure, space & visual culture:
practices and meanings with Cara Aitchison. |

Treasurer KIM POLISTINA
Kim Polistina is currently working as a Senior Lecturer in the
School of Applied Sciences (Life Sciences) at the University
of Glamorgan, South Wales. She co-ordinates the Outdoor Learning
Degrees. Her doctorale research focused on an examination of
the sharing of pro-environmental knowledge and values through
the outdoor learning practices of Australian appreciative outdoor
leisure communities and contemporary Indigenous communities.
Her personal and scholarly interests include lifelong outdoor
and environmental learning, outdoor leisure and lifestyles, cultural
and gender studies. (Exec member from July 2003, current term

David is Reader
in Tourism at Glasgow Caledonian University. He has a longstanding
involvement with the LSA, dating from his contributions to conferences
during the 1980s and subsequent involvement as a Committee member
and Editor of the LSA Newsletter. Notably he staged the 1994
LSA conference on "Leisure, Tourism and the Environment",
and edited the two resulting LSA Publications volumes: Tourism
and Leisure: Culture, Heritage and Participation (No. 51)
and Tourism and Leisure: Perspectives on Provision (No.
52). More generally, David is known for research in tourism,
which has lead to many publications in leading journals, commissioned
reports and conference papers with particular emphasis on tourism

ANDREW ADAMS
Andrew Adams is a senior lecturer
at Southampton Solent University Business School where he is
course leader for sport development. Andy's doctoral research
focuses on the developing relationship between social capital,
sports policy and the role of the voluntary sports clubs.

RUTH JEANES
Dr. Ruth Jeanes
is currently working for the Institute of Youth Sport as a Research
Associate evaluating the sportscotland's Active Schools initiative,
the New Opportunities in PE and Sport initiative and the Chance
to Shine cricket development programme. Ruth is also involved
in an evaluation of HIV/AIDS education programme delivered through
sport in Zambia by two non-governmental organisations. As part
of this project Ruth undertook research with young people in
Lusaka, Zambia who had taken part in the programme. She completed
her PhD part-time in November 2006 entitled 'Tackling Gender:
Girls, football and gender identity construction'. Her research
examined the experiences of girls participation in football and
how playing affects their gender identity construction. Her main
research interests concern youth sports policy, gender and sport,
innovative ways to conduct research with children and female
identity and culture.

LINDSEY KILGOUR
Senior Lecturer in Exercise
and Health Sciences (Psychology) at the University of Gloucestershire.
Her main field of study is exercise and physical activity, although
many of her teaching commitments are in the area of health. These
interests include women's physical activity and health, child
obesity and contemporary issues in exercise and health. Lindsey's
research interests include women's barriers to outdoor physical
activity, children/young people's experiences of PE and physical
activity, and workplace physical activity. As well as being a
member of LSA she is also a member of the British Psychological
Society (and a section member of the Psychology of Women section),
BASES, the Feminist and Women's Studies Association and the National
Women's Transport Network. Current term expires July 2009 (Exec

AARTI RATNA
Aarti is a lecturer in sociology
of sport and leisure at the Carnegie Institute of Sport and Education,
Leeds Metropolitan University. Her research interests centre
upon the connections between 'race', ethnicity and gender in
the context of sport and leisure. Prior to working at Leeds Met,
Aarti did a PhD at Chelsea School, University of Brighton about
British Asian females' racialised experiences of gender and identity
in women's football. She is also a Racial Equality Tutor for
the Football Association in England. (Exec member from 7/2007;

JOHN SCHULZ
John Schulz is a Lecturer in
Sport Management at the University of Southampton. He has previously
worked at the University of Edinburgh and before that, he completed
his PhD at Griffith University in Brisbane Australia. His research
interest lies in the management of sporting clubs and associations.
In particular he is interested in understanding motivation and
how motivation relates to the recruitment and retention practices
of volunteer organizations. He is also researching the nature
of conflict in sporting organizations and how this is related
to organizational practices. (Current term expires July 2009)

IAN WELLARD
Dr Ian Wellard is based in
the Faculty of Education, Canterbury Christ Church University,
UK, where he is Head of the Centre for Physical Education Research.
He gained a MA in Qualitative Sociology at Goldsmiths and a PhD
in Sociology at the Open University which was funded by the Pavis
Centre. He has been involved in a number funded projects related
to the body, gender and sport and physical activity in education.
These include an investigation into girls' participation in physical
activities for the World Health Organisation, an exploration
into talent development in school sport, commissioned by the
DfES, and an assessment of national play policy for Play England
and the National Children's Bureau. He has published many articles
relating to his research in international journals and has recently
edited a book on 'Rethinking Gender and Youth Sport' for
Routledge. (Current term expires July 2009)

DONNA WONG
Donna Wong is PhD student (Physical
Education, Sport and Leisure Studies) at the University of Edinburgh.
She received a BA (Merit) from the National University of Singapore,
earned a Masters Degree in Mass Communication at the Nanyang
Technological University (Singapore) and completed a Masters
in Sport and Recreation Business Management with the University
of Edinburgh. She is currently working on her PhD thesis on 'Sport
and New Media Leisure Technology'. Her main research areas are
in sport and mass media. She has previously worked with the Singapore
Sports Council for 9 years. (Exec member from 7/2007; current
