Active Leisure
and Young People
July 13th~15th
2004
Leeds Metropolitan University
There is an increasing media
focus on the nature and boundaries of 'youth' and also young
people's lifestyle choices. ACTIVE LEISURE AND YOUNG PEOPLE
offers a specific forum to debate issues surrounding the active
engagement with leisure by young people. There is growing diversity
as to how leisure functions in the lives and lifestyle choices
of the young. Separate academic disciplines focus upon different
dimensions in the individual's life course: from the role of
play in early years, physical activity/PE at school and more
recently health-related issues surrounding adolescence in free
time.
Representations of young people
from concerned parents and experts often dwell on obesity and
diet, sex, mobile phones, truancy and troubles from drug abuse.
Some describe young people's street and club cultures as 'scenes'
and inhabited by 'neo-tribes', while 'specialist sports colleges'
and 'school sport co-ordinators' seek to influence their physical
education and activity. Young people's health has become a major
concern and policy makers regard being 'active' as crucial to
the health of the nation.
ACTIVE LEISURE AND YOUNG
PEOPLE aims to capture
the various aspects of active leisure and we welcome contributions
from researchers, theorists and practitioners in the fields of
art, play, recreation, physical activity, sport, education, health
and leisure. Papers will be presented from a wide range of perspectives
and disciplines that explore the following themes:
- Engagement and participation
- Policy and provision
- Consumption
- Alienation and subcultures
- Health, safety, risk and
environments
